Africans Inventing New Furniture

It’s time to rewrite the narrative about African beauty and aesthetics. Africa will solve African problems and Africa will create African reality and worldview. Jomo Tariku, a furniture designer and data scientist with the World Bank, discovered in 2020 that only 0.03% of the 4,399 designers employed by 161 international furniture companies were Black while preparing for a lecture at Princeton University. Mr. Tariku suggested names of Black furniture designers to be featured on furniture company websites. He selected nine designers from a list of more than 80, with diverse backgrounds and styles, who share a spirit of self-fulfillment despite lacking formal training. Let’s meet them and their extraordinarily creative designs which, though not inventions in the formal sense of the word, are still breakthrough advances in the “state of the art” in furniture design.
