Dear friends, on March 12th I had the privilege of presenting at Chuka University on the topic “AI Mentorship – Restoring African Agency.” The presentation explores how AI can help extend mentorship, strengthen innovation learning, and support African learners in shaping their own future. Tharaka Invention Academy (TIA), is a pioneering educational model in Kenya designed to foster innovation in resource-constrained, post-colonial settings. By treating the lack of traditional classrooms and instructors as design parameters, TIA utilizes an AI-mediated cognitive apprenticeship to deliver high-level mentorship. This ecosystem features over 150 specialized AI agents, known as Problem Pals™, which externalize expert thinking and guide students through complex problem-solving without simply providing answers. The curriculum is deeply rooted in African epistemology, specifically the philosophy of Ubuntu, ensuring that technological advancement remains tied to communal ethics and ancestral wisdom. Ultimately, the project seeks to disrupt passive “banking models” of education, restoring human agency and creative sovereignty to learners. These materials argue that in contexts with a zero ratio of human mentors, AI can successfully substitute for instructional presence to bridge the global innovation gap.
