Concern About African Travel

MEMBERS & VISITORS:

Why the concern about Americans of African origin going to Africa?

Phillip Scott reports on “Them Folks” media reporting on Black American traveling to African nations. Why are they so concerned about us going to African nations? The mainstream media’s coverage of Black Americans traveling to African nations may be driven by a variety of factors. One reason could be that it is a topic of interest to readers and viewers, particularly in the context of Black history and the African diaspora. Additionally, the media may be interested in reporting on the experiences of Black Americans in Africa, as it can provide insight into issues such as cultural identity, race relations, and economic development. It’s also possible that the media is reporting on this topic in order to highlight the challenges and barriers that Black Americans may face when traveling to Africa, such as discrimination and lack of representation. Equally, the newsworthiness of this group traveling to Africa in increasing numbers could be a testimony that the world itself is at a highly significant tipping point wherein the “southern” world is gaining parity with and will likely surpass the “northern” world in control and influence moving forward. However, there is no single reason why the mainstream media is “so concerned” about this topic and it’s important to view any reporting on it in the context of the larger news landscape. This is probably the intent of Phillip Scott as he highlights what he sees as the primary motivating factors.
