Engineering Failure Case Study 3
Innovation and creativity has lead to gigantic leaps being made by mankind away from hunter gatherer societies of the past. Always keep in mind however that these leaps have invariably had their share of failures. The explosion of the space shuttle and now this underwater submersible are case studies in failed engineering. The ability to do better was there but human frailties lead to designers and engineers not performing at expected levels of competence. Sadly, people had to die because of this.
The Coast Guard said all five passengers aboard the submersible that went missing on a deep-sea voyage to the Titanic are presumed dead. The U.S. Coast Guard offered their deepest condolences to the families of the passengers aboard a Titanic-exploring submersible after debris from the sub was found on the sea floor. The debris was “consistent with a catastrophic event” suffered by the pressure chamber of the sub. Wreckage from the missing Titan submersible has been found near the site of the Titanic. All those who were on board were lost at sea.
