African Innovators Preparing For A New Future

“Africa Fed up With Being a Source of Raw Materials” – African Union Chair

African Inventors and innovators in many different disciplines will help lead the way in a future which is currently being charted. It is no secret that for decades, Africa has grappled with the burden of being seen primarily as a provider of raw materials for the global economy, a perception that has perpetuated exploitation and hindered the continent’s development. Rich in diverse resources such as minerals, oil, and agricultural products, Africa has been subjected to a neocolonial relationship where its wealth is extracted to fuel the growth of other nations, often at the expense of local communities and sustainable development. This exploitation has exacerbated poverty, environmental degradation, and social inequalities. However, a remarkable shift is underway as Africa awakens to its true potential, forging a newfound determination to extract greater value from its resources and form beneficial partnerships instead of simply being seen as a raw material source. What will this new outlook of seeking mutual benefit rather than exploitation mean for Africa’s future and its relationships with the rest of the world?

In a resolute statement to the BBC, the African Union’s Trade Commissioner, Zambia’s Albert Muchanga, vehemently declared that Africa refuses to passively remain a mere provider of raw materials for the rest of the world. Instead, Mr Muchanga insists that the continent aspires to foster a future characterized by “genuine and mutually beneficial relationships” with its trade allies. This proclamation coincided with the AU’s chair receiving an invitation to the 49th G7 summit, which was held from 19th to 21st May 2023 in Hiroshima, Japan.
