Back to AFRICAN Roots

Since 2019, over 1,500 African Americans have relocated to Ghana in response to the “Year of Return” campaign by the Ghanaian government. This initiative, commemorating 400 years since the arrival of enslaved Africans in Jamestown, Virginia, served as a spiritual journey for the African diaspora. It aimed to honor the resilience of those forcibly displaced by the trans-Atlantic slave trade across North America, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia.

In 2020, Ghana launched the “Beyond the Return” campaign, a decade-long project with the theme “A decade of African Renaissance — 2020-2030.” This effort has continued to attract the African diaspora to visit Ghana, including historical sites like the Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site with ties to the slave trade and Christianity’s arrival. Visitors are deeply moved by the slave dungeons’ tragic history, highlighting the enduring impact of these campaigns. Additional activities, such as music festivals, also maintain interest among Africans in the diaspora.
