The Value of Local Capacity Building

Community capacity building for women in Tharaka-Nithi County:

Tharaka Invention Circle CBO has been developing a path to its most valuable role in our local community. The following areas are just some in which we can make significant contributions. Progress will certainly depend upon the contributions of numerous other stakeholders

In a rural county like Tharaka-Nithi, women between the ages of 40-60 years often face unique challenges that could be alleviated through targeted capacity building. Some primary concerns and issues among this cohort, and how capacity building could benefit them, include:

Access to Healthcare: Many women in this age group face health issues such as chronic diseases (e.g., hypertension and diabetes), reproductive health concerns, and menopause-related challenges. Capacity building could focus on health education, promoting preventive healthcare, and training community health workers to support women’s health at the local level.

Economic Empowerment: Women in rural areas may have limited economic opportunities, often relying on subsistence farming or informal labor. Capacity building programs in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and sustainable agricultural practices could help women diversify their income sources and improve their economic independence.

Education and Literacy: Some women in this cohort may have had limited access to formal education earlier in life. Adult education and skills training programs can help improve literacy, numeracy, and digital skills, enabling them to better manage household finances, access information, and engage in entrepreneurial activities.

Social Inclusion and Leadership: Rural women may be underrepresented in community decision-making and leadership roles. Capacity building initiatives could focus on developing leadership skills, encouraging women to participate in local governance, and strengthening their role in community development efforts.

Water and Sanitation: Access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities is often a significant challenge. Capacity building programs could train women in water management, hygiene practices, and sanitation technologies, empowering them to lead community efforts in improving water access and health outcomes.

Climate Change Adaptation and Environmental Sustainability: With climate change affecting agriculture and the availability of natural resources, women need knowledge on sustainable practices and climate adaptation strategies. Training on conservation agriculture, renewable energy sources (such as solar power), and sustainable resource management could help women mitigate the effects of environmental degradation.

Psychosocial Support and Well-being: Women in this age group may also face psychosocial issues, such as stress related to caregiving responsibilities, loss of spouses, or isolation. Capacity building could involve establishing support networks, mental health awareness programs, and counseling services to promote emotional well-being.

Food Security and Nutrition: Ensuring adequate nutrition for themselves and their families is a major concern for many rural women. Training in improved farming techniques, food preservation, and nutrition education can enhance food security and improve overall health outcomes for their families.

By focusing on these areas, capacity-building programs in Tharaka-Nithi could significantly empower women in this age group, improving their quality of life and enabling them to contribute more effectively to their families and communities.
