Why Did I Return To Africa In 2020?

Hello. Habari. My name is MARION KAPLAN. I was a journalist who was based in the United Kingdom when I wrote the following story about Professor Oku Singer. In 1976 I traveled to Ghana to interview Oku and his wife about their five year adventure in this progressive West African nation. Born in London, I lived as photojournalist and writer in Africa for twenty years. As freelance, I covered a broad range of stories for magazines and newspapers including National Geographic and Time in the United States and The Observer in London. My photographs have also appeared in many books. I first arrived in South Africa in 1956, beginning a decades-long love affair with the continent which has lasted all my life — it is the place in which I feel most at home, and return to most often. Listen to my story about a young African American family who also loved the continent and moved to Africa in search of a better life.

Oku and Olubiyi could never have lived and explored Ghana the way we did without the trusty Vespa motorscooter that they had shipped from the United States. It carried Oku, wife, and daughter everywhere they went. They used it for all of their work and errands. Kofi, the mechanic who was entrusted with major repairs became one of Oku’s best friends.
